This week TCL officially released their new line of high end TCL Roku TVs called the 6 Series. Yet many are asking why they would buy the more expensive 6 Series when the TCL 5 Series Roku TVs look very similar.

Both have similar specs including 4K HDR Dolby Vision. So what makes the 6 Series stand out? Let’s first take a look at both lines.

TCL 6 Series

The TCL 6 Series Roku TVs includes a 4K high dynamic range picture. The set will support Dolby Vision HDR and boasts HDR Performance Package Pro to further elevate the experience. The HDR Performance Package Pro includes Contrast Control Zone Technology, a new iPQ Engine, and a versatile HDR Pro Gamma control. With 96 zones for the 55″ 6-Series TV and 120 zones for the 65″ model, the 6 Series includes high-speed 802.11ac wireless and Ethernet networking and three HDMI® 2.0a ports with HDCP 2.2 so users can enjoy optimal functionality on all inputs. TCL says the 6-Series Roku TVs will be released in spring 2018.

TCL 5 Series

TCL also announced a new TCL 5 Series Roku TVs with 4K UHD picture quality that also includes Dolby Vision HDR for a stellar imaging experience. The 5 Series includes TCL’s HDR Performance Package, which features HDR Dynamic Contrast™. The HDR Dynamic Contrast solution uses information embedded in Dolby Vision content to create a true cinematic experience by optimizing every scene for an accurate display of details in the bright and dark areas simultaneously, unlike other HDR solutions that have a set brightness level for all content. As with the 6 Series, the models within TCL’s 5-Series lineup introduce both iPQ Engine for precise color replication and HDR Pro Gamma to significantly improve HDR performance in any setting. The 5 Series includes high-speed 802.11ac wireless and Ethernet networking and three HDMI® 2.0a ports with HDCP 2.2 so users can enjoy optimal functionality on all inputs. TCL says the 5-Series Roku TVs will be released in spring 2018.

So what is different?

There are two main differences. First, the 6 Series has a high end brushed metal body and stand. The 5 Series has a plastic body. Right now as best I can tell the TCL 6 Series is the only Roku TV with a metal body. (The TCL C Series had a metal body but is being replaced with the 6 Series.)

The other main difference are the control zones. The TCL 6 Series has 96 zones for the 55″ 6-Series TV and 120 zones for the 65″ model. This allows the TV to have different brightness and darkness zones. Most TVs, like the TCL 5 Series, have a constant control of things like brightness across the screen. Now you have the ability to adjust different areas of the screen to make blacks look darker and bright colors really pop.

The TCL 6 Series also offers the ability to have local dimming meaning if part of the screen is showing a bright color and the other part is in black the TV will auto dim the darker areas and brighten the lighter areas.
