A new survey shows that YouTube is a more popular video platform than Netflix for teens.

The Piper Jaffray Fall 2019 Survey shows that 37% of teens choose YouTube for streaming video while the previous leader, Netflix, came in at 35% this time.

In the Piper Jaffray Taking Stock With Teens survey, the researchers say the teen-focused content available on the platform is one of the factors helping YouTube gain popularity over Netflix. YouTube allows content creators, many in the same age range as the teens surveyed, to make videos about topics that teens relate to. From daily vlogs, to product reviews, to how-to videos, there is a seemingly never-ending supply of content to watch every day.

Another factor helping with the popularity of YouTube is that the platform is free. Teens (and adults) can create an account, subscribe to their favorite creators, and get daily video recommendations, all without paying a monthly fee.

After YouTube at 37% and Netflix at 35%, cable came in next for daily video consumption at 12%, then Hulu at 7%, Amazon Prime at 3%, and other streaming services at 5%.

“As teens see their households continue to migrate away from traditional TV services, we expect a growing transition of consumer content spend towards online video services,” Piper Jaffray analysts wrote in the report. “Looking into 2020 and beyond, despite increasing competition from Disney and Apple, we are optimistic regarding ongoing international sub growth and price increases.”
