The Best Wi-Fi Routers for Cord Cutting (Updated: August 2018)

The number one reason for buffering and poor streaming is weak Wi-Fi. The good news is you don’t have to use the Wi-Fi router that came from your internet service provider. We highly recommend you buy your own because it typically will be a far better experience.

We often get asked what is the best Wi-Fi router for streaming. Today we want to list what we think are the best Wi-Fi routers for cord cutting. This list is in no particular order; feel free to pick any of the routers on this list that you think would best fit your needs.

One note: You will still need a modem for internet. These are just Wi-Fi routers to create a Wi-Fi network in your home from your internet service provider’s modem.

Google Wi-Fi System

The Google Wi-Fi System lets you place multiple transmitters around your home. Each transmitter covers up to 1,500 square feet. Perfect for anyone with a large home. Setup is simple and, according to our readers, it is one of the best mesh Wi-Fi systems on the market today.

You can find the Google Wi-Fi System on Amazon here.

Netgear Nighthawk X6S

If you have watched a lot of my Q&As, you will hear me talk about how impressed I have been with Netgear routers. I have used the NETGEAR Nighthawk X6S for several years. If you want a powerful router with a lot of options, check out the Netgear Nighthawk X6S.

ZyXEL Multy X Kit

Now ZyXEL is likely not a name you know here in the United States. They have a huge following in Europe, but they are now for sale in the US. Of all the mesh systems we have tested, the ZyXEL is by far the best. Crazy fast speeds and a great range means you will be streaming in the back yard just like you would in your house.

You can find the ZyXEL Multy X Kit on Amazon here.

Netgear NightHawk AC1750

Need something less expensive? Check out the Netgear NightHawk AC1750. This is a great mid-range router that is under $100 (at the time of this posting). I have used these routers before, and you will find many of the features of the X6S but without the price. This is a great option for anyone with a smaller area to cover.

You can find the Netgear NightHawk AC1750 on Amazon here.
