The Consumers Electronics Show (CES) 2019 is in full swing as we enter the second day of the show. Most of the big announcements have been made and everyone is now going hands on with the new products on the show floor.

What is some of the biggest cord cutting news from CES 2019 so far? Here are our picks.

5G

The dream of cord cutters is to have a new Internet provider in their area. For years most have been limited to two or maybe three Internet providers. Now with 5G there is hope of new Internet services hitting the market.

5G home Internet is different from 5G coming from your Wi-Fi router. This will be new companies delivering Internet wirelessly to your home without the need for any wire running to your house.

At CES this year a host of companies have been launching the products needed to make 5G a reality including routers and other 5G standards. Look for 5G rollout to pick up pace in 2019.

New Smart TVs

We are getting a ton of news about new TVs from Roku to Android TV hitting stores this year. Roku has made a big splash with new partners like Westinghouse. They also are rolling out larger 75″ TVs and even 8K TVs with TCL.

Keep your eyes open for new more powerful TVs in the weeks and months to come.

DVRs

As OTA TV market grows so does the need for new DVRs. Tablo and HDHomeRun are both rolling out new OTA DVRs.

Tablo has a new four tuner model that will offer the option of adding an internal hard drive plus better Wi-Fi. The best-selling point is all Tablo DVRs will be getting a new feature to auto skip commercials in recordings later this year.

SiliconDust announced a new all-in-one HDHomeRun. In the past you needed multiple devices to use an HDHomeRun as a DVR. Now with one device, you will be able to do just that.

Final Thoughts

There is still a lot of waiting for what will happen next in the world of cord cutting. With 5G home Internet almost here and ATSC 3.0 over-the-air TV on its way, many are in a wait and see mode. Yet we are slowly seeing the industry move forward to be ready for the next revaluation in over-the-air TV and home Internet.
