Cord Cutters News

The Future of Cord Cutting Is Cutting the Cord on Home Internet

For years cord cutting detractors have pushed the idea that you can’t cut the cord if you get your Internet from a cable or DSL provider. The argument is you are still paying a company that also owns a traditional pay-TV service.

Most cord cutters seem to focus on TV as cord cutting and not home Internet. Yet there is a growing trend toward not only cutting the cable TV bill but also the cable Internet bill. Almost every day someone asks how to lower their Internet bill or if they can use their cellphone for home Internet. The good news is there is a growing push to help you cut the cord on home Internet.

Right now, there are a growing number of new home Internet services like fixed wireless, 5G, and fiber that are working hard to offer new home Internet options without the need for cable or DSL Internet.

This seems to be the next big step in cord cutting. Now that there are a growing number of options for cord cutters to get home internet instead of just DSL and cable. While it may be a slow process, it is starting to happen with 5G likely being the most well-known option.

How will cord cutting benefit new home Internet options like 5G?

5G focuses on wireless technology that goes far beyond smartphones and laptops. The goal is for 5G to become your home Internet service and remove the need to run a physical wire to each home.

5G, in short, is the next generation of wireless Internet: one built to support home Internet. With this newer, faster wireless technology, we’ll have more options when it comes to how we connect our devices. Rather than being stuck with two or three Internet providers in your area, you’ll soon be able to add mobile companies and even new companies such as DISH and Google. Even Spectrum is working on 5G with the hopes of launching 5G home Internet in areas they do not currently offer Internet service in.

As more companies launch 5G we will soon go from having two or three options for home Internet to having five or maybe even ten home Internet options. This competition from new companies jumping into the home Internet business will finally break cord cutters free from being stuck with cable companies that seem to do nothing but raise the price of cable TV.

This is no overnight fix. 5G will take some time to roll out, but it has already started and slowly it will give cord cutters real options besides cable and DSL for Internet.
