Netflix has announced that 62 million households streamed its new series The Queens Gambit‘ during its first 28 days, leading it to become the streamer’s most-watched scripted limited series. The show has seen unprecedented success globally, landing in the Top 10 in 92 countries and ranking No. 1 in 63 countries.
The show is based on Walter Tevis’ 1983 book about a young chess prodigy and has rocketed the novel onto The New York Times bestseller list 37 years after its release.
The Queen’s Gambit also has achieved a rare 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Other rippling effects from The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix have resulted in Google doubling search queries for chess, with searches for “how to play chess” hitting a nine-year peak. Goliath Games has reported its Chess set sales have increased over 170%, and eBay searches for ‘chess sets’ are up 250%.
