We Tested Sling TV’s Antenna Installation Service: Here Is How It Went

A few years ago, Sling TV announced that they would be offering antenna installation for both indoor and outdoor antennas. Starting at $99 and going up to $150, Sling TV will sell you an antenna and install it for you. (For the outdoor antenna, it sells antennas like the Televes DigiNova Boss UHF/VHF that was installed at my house; for the indoor, it offers the Winegard flat antenna.)

One important note: You do NOT have to be a Sling TV subscriber to use this service. It is open to anyone even if you don’t subscribe to any Sling TV or Dish services.

Last week Sling TV contacted Cord Cutters News to ask if we would like to test the Sling TV antenna installation service for a second time at my new house. We decided to give the service a second test so we can report on how it works now. This install was paid for by Sling TV, but the install process was the same as it would have been for anyone.

Setting Up the Appointment and Before the Installer Showed Up

Friday afternoon we talked with a Sling TV representative and picked the time and date of the install. After we set up the installation, we received confirmation and the day before the install we got a call with the rough time to expect the installer. The day of the install, we received a text message to say they were on their way.

Sling TV also gave us the option to buy an Air TV and even a hard drive for the DVR if we wanted it. The Dish tech would set up the Air TV.

What Sling TV Did to Set Up the Antenna

The techs arrived at my house during the one-hour window provided on the phone. Work took just under 1.5 hours, and they cleaned up after themselves.

I asked them to install the antenna in my attic instead of my roof. They mounted the antenna in my attic and quickly connected it to the cable already running into my living room. The Dish techs used a app on their phone that showed the direction of the towers in my area so they could setup the antenna for the best results.

Testing the Televes DigiNova Boss Outdoor Antenna

I had never heard of the Televes DigiNova Boss antenna before it came with my installation. I already had an Antenna Direct 4V in my attic and was skeptical of the antenna sold by Dish. It looked small compared to the 4V, which struggled to get my local NBC.

I am happy to report after the first try the Televes DigiNova Boss antenna picked up all the channels I wanted and many more. We went from picking up 10 channels with an indoor antenna to almost 50 with channels from two different markets with an outdoor antenna.

The Televes DigiNova Boss antenna sells for about $100 at several retailers. It is listed with 60-mile range, which is much shorter than the range on the 4V from Antenna Direct; however, it was still able to pick up the same stations as the 4V in my house plus many more.

Remember location affects reception, and your experience will vary.

Cost

The outdoor antenna installation would have cost $150, but if you want a second line run to a second room it costs an extra $50 per additional room up to four rooms. This was a demo, so Sling TV covered the cost of installation.

Final Thoughts

Although many will be happy to install their own antenna, I can see why others will be happy to have Dish do it for them. With the antenna alone costing about $100, it is only an extra $50 for installation. For anyone who is not physically able to or just does not have the time and wants to get it done right, I highly recommend this service.

I did look around to see how the price compared to others and found Amazon also installs roof antennas in my area, but they charge $249.12 plus the cost of the antenna. I saved a little over $200 with the Dish installation and antenna versus the $249.12 price for the Amazon installation and the cost of an antenna.

Two thumbs up! I highly recommend the Sling TV antenna installation. You can set up a Sling TV antenna installation by calling 1-888-364-6055.
