We often get questions about the best streaming devices and services for cord cutters. Our answer is always that there’s no one perfect device or service that works for everyone but learning about the options can help each person choose the best options for them.

In this post, we’re answering some of the basic questions about the Fire TV to help you make your choice.

What is Fire TV?

The Fire TV is Amazon’s media streaming device. Amazon launched the first Fire TV device in 2014 and has since developed several products that let you stream content, listen to music, and even play games.

The Amazon library is loaded with thousands of streaming channels. Look for favorites like Netflix, Hulu, and, of course, Prime Video, along with smaller and more niche channels. You can also go online with your Fire TV using Silk or Firefox web browsers to view content on websites like YouTube and Reddit.

Because these are Amazon products, Amazon content is prominent on the main menu and in ads when browsing for content.

What Devices Are Available?

There are several streaming devices in the Fire TV family. You can find them all on Amazon with free Prime shipping.

  • Fire TV Stick for $39.99
  • Fire TV Stick 4K for $49.99
  • Fire TV Cube for $119.99

Upgrading to the Fire TV Stick 4K will provide better picture quality. Upgrading again to the Fire TV Cube will also give you a built-in speaker with far-field voice control, more storage, and the ability to connect directly to ethernet for a more stable connection.

Can I Use Alexa With Fire TV?

Yes. With the Alexa Voice Remote, you can use voice commands for hands-free control when watching TV and movies. All devices now come with the Alexa Voice Remote.

What Extra Costs Will I See?

The Fire TV device is a one-time expense with no monthly fees and no activation fees.

Buying your device does not give you instant access to content. You’ll need to add channels to watch content. When adding channels, you’ll find both free and paid streaming services to choose from. You’ll need to pay for each of those subscriptions separately.

Do I Need a Separate Device in Each Room?

Fire TV devices are made to work on one TV at a time. The Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick 4K are easy to transport if you’d like to move your device from one room to the next, or you can get a separate device for each TV in the home.
