What to Expect from Sling TV in 2019: Channel Contracts, Device Support, & More

Sling TV was the first major live TV streaming service in the United States. They set the bar for live TV streaming services. Sling TV is also still the largest live TV streaming service with over 2 million live TV subscribers.

Sadly Sling TV has been very quiet on what they are working on. Yet 2018 was full of new channels with the addition of multiple new networks most notably the addition of Discovery networks. Sling TV also added support for many new devices including VR in 2018.

So, what is coming in 2019? Here is our best guess:

Contract Talks with Disney

Sling TV has used DISH Network’s contract talks to add new channels. By requiring Sling TV support as part of contract talks with DISH, Sling TV has added networks like the NFL Network in recent years. Now in a few years some contracts are coming up for renewal.

While DISH has not officially announced when their contract with Disney will end, it is one of the oldest contracts DISH still has. As best we can tell, Disney and ABC last struck a deal with DISH in March 2014. CBS last had a deal with DISH in December of 2014 and renewed it in 2017. If the deal with Disney was a 5-year contract, that would make 2019 the year for negotiations to once again happen between the two companies. (If not in 2019 look for DISH and Disney to once again go into talks in the next few years.)

Look for other networks to also go into renewal talks with DISH for their Sling TV streaming rights.

Device Support

One of the selling points for Sling TV was its huge list of supported devices. Look for this to continue into 2019 as Sling TV will likely keep adding support.

International

In recent years international packages have become the biggest selling point for Sling TV. Sling TV even launched an international version of their app on Comcast’s set-top boxes. Look for Sling TV to keep building out their international packages. Keep an eye out for more international streaming support from Sling TV in 2019.
