Since coronavirus concerns caused live sports to be put on hold, we’ve been keeping an eye out for updates about when the seasons will start back up so we can all get back to streaming our favorite teams. Some sports leagues have been releasing statements this week to update fans. Here’s what we know and where you’ll be able to watch when the seasons start.
NFL
Earlier this week, ESPN shared a post noting that there are 100 days before the scheduled start of the NFL season. For now, the first game is still set for September 10. Facilities began opening up mid-May at 50% capacity. Players could potentially be on the field mid-June.

MLB
CBS Sports reported late Thursday night that Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association (MLBPA) are still in talks about a plan for the 2020 season. The league reportedly made a proposal that was met with a counterproposal from the MLBPA that included a 114 game schedule. That counterproposal was rejected and there has been no counteroffer.
NBA
The NBA took a big step forward in restarting the season this week. The league voted 29-1 to approve a plan for a 22 team format and a start to the league season next month. The National Basketball Players Association will vote on the plan today. If the plan is approved, teams would gather at the Disney campus in Florida on July 7 and would start an eight game slate of games beginning on July 31.
“The Board’s approval of the restart format is a necessary step toward resuming the NBA season,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said. “While the COVID-19 pandemic presents formidable challenges, we are hopeful of finishing the season in a safe and responsible manner based on strict protocols now being finalized with public health officials and medical experts.”
Major League Soccer
A statement was posted on the MLS website Thursday, saying that MLS and the MLS Players Association completed a new collective bargaining agreement this week. While the season was suspended, full details are expected to be released in the coming days.
NHL
The NHL announced its Return to Play Plan on Tuesday. After the regular season was paused on March 12, the 12 qualifying teams from the Eastern and Western conferences were determined by points percentage up to that date. Seven teams did not qualify: the Buffalo Sabres, New Jersey Devils, Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings. Games will be played in hub cities, based on locations that can meet safety regulations and government guidelines.
Commissioner Bettman said the NHL believes the qualifying and first two rounds of the playoffs can be completed in a little more than a month, according to information shared on the NHL website.
Nascar
The Nascar season started back up in May with a revised schedule. The third installment of the rebuilt 2020 schedule was released on Wednesday, with races scheduled through August 2.
