Cloud DVRs work like traditional DVRs, allowing users to record content. However, they store content in the cloud so you won’t need an additional device to store your recordings.
The major live TV streaming services offer Cloud DVR options, either included in the subscription base cost or available as an add-on service. We’re comparing the DVR options of live TV streaming services below.
To use the Sling Cloud DVR, you’ll need to add the Cloud DVR extra to your subscription for an additional $5/month. With the add-on, you can record Live TV, fast forward through commercials, and record multiple shows at once. The cloud DVR add-on includes 50 hours of storage space.
With the Sling TV DVR, you can keep recordings for as long as you’re a customer. If you cancel your subscriptions, your recordings will remain saved for 30 days, so if you come back, your content will still be waiting for you.
Some restrictions apply. DVR functionality is not available for Disney and ESPN channels or for on-demand only channels, including Local Now. For more information, visit Sling’s website.
PlayStation Vue subscriptions include a Cloud DVR with “lots of storage” that will save recordings for up to 28 days. The DVR allows you to fast forward through content on all channels except for Fox, FX, and FXX.
Select channels and programs cannot be recorded. These include HBO, Showtime, and Cinemax (though PlayStation Vue points out that most of the programs from these channels can be saved with the on demand version available in the My DVR section.) Hulu has a Cloud DVR feature for Live TV subscribers. Each account includes 50 hours of DVR storage with the option to upgrade to 200 total hours for an additional $14.99/month.
Content will stay in your DVR and you can continue to record as long as your Live TV subscription is active and your storage limits aren’t exceeded. If your DVR is full, you’ll see a DVR Full message in the Manage DVR section.
When you are at your storage limit, your DVR will free up space by automatically deleting the oldest recordings. You can manually delete content in the Manage DVR section. For more information, visit the Hulu website.
YouTube TV includes unlimited Cloud DVR storage with every subscription. There is no limit on simultaneous recordings. Recordings are saved for 9 months.
YouTube TV allows 6 profiles for each subscription. The DVR feature allows each profile to have their own personal DVR library so you won’t have to see your family members’ recordings and will be able to easily find your own.
You can skip ads, pause, and rewind most recordings. Rarely, recorded content will have unskippable ads when a network replaces recorded content with the on-demand version. For more information, visit the YouTube TV website.
AT&T TV NOW includes True Cloud DVR Beta. Each subscription comes with 20 hours of DVR storage and allows users to fast forward, rewind, and skip commercials.
AT&T TV NOW notes that functions may be limited in beta. The DVR is not available for select channels (restricted channels are not listed.) Recordings expire after 30 days. Check the AT&T TV NOW website to learn more.
Fubo TV includes 30 hours of Cloud DVR with every basic package. There’s also an option to upgrade to 500 hours for an additional $9.99/month. You an record any live programs on most channels before or during the program’s airing and your Cloud DVR will record the entire program.
With the Fubo TV Cloud DVR and Cloud DVR Plus, content is saved indefinitely or until deleted.
