Authentic scrambled reception on a TV screenHave you found your antenna is not getting the over-the-air (OTA) TV signals it should? No hills or other issues between you and the tower you want to pick up? It turns out wind turbines that generate power may be the issue.

Recently Cord Cutters News has head from multiple readers who thought local wind turbines are blocking their antenna from picking up TV stations. Even people inside the industry have told us that wind turbines are causing issues with OTA signals.

It turns out that this is not a new issue. We found news stories dating back as far as 2013 talking about how wind turbines are blocking OTA TV.

Even groups like PagerPower, which helps build wind farms, say “Wind turbines affect TV signals. In some cases, this causes noticeable interference at nearby residences.”

So why are wind farms causing so many issues? Unlike a single skyscraper that can block signals in areas right around them, wind farms are massive—they can cover miles.

To help address the issue with wind farms blocking OTA TV in the UK many planning authorities are requiring studies to see how wind farms will block OTA TV.

OTA TV is not the only thing being impacted by wind farms. Telecommunications systems and even air traffic control have also been affected.

Hopefully, the US will follow the UK’s example and include how wind farms will affect OTA TV as part of the considerations when building new wind farms.
