Locast a live TV streaming service that launched back in January in New York City to offer access to 15 stations including ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC. Recently Locast expanded into a 7th market with the addition of Washington DC. and Baltimore. Don’t look for Locast to stop there according to the people behind the service they plan to keep expanding into other markets later this year. With Locast you can stream ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC among others for free in Denver, Washington DC., Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, and New York.
Now Locast has rolled out an Apple TV app letting you stream locals for free. This comes just a few days after Locast added support for Android TV meaning you can now watch Locast on the Roku, Fire TV, Android TV, and Apple TV. You can add Locast to your Apple TV HERE.
Last month David Goodfriend, Chairman of Sports Fans Coalition New York gave a update on Locast. “More than 87,000 people have signed up with Locast since we launched last January,” said David Goodfriend. “Locast is bringing the public mission of free, local broadcast to a new generation of cord-cutters and Internet-only video consumers. With the addition of Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD, Locast has now provided almost a third of U.S. television households with a way to watch local broadcast TV, even if you do not subscribe to pay-TV or cannot receive an over-the-air signal.”
Locast also recently announced the launch of a new Roku, Fire TV Chromecast, AirPlay, Android, and iOS apps making it easier to stream your locals. Locast parent company Sports Fans Coalition is a nonprofit and says they have an exception in the FCC rules that allows them to air locals without paying them for the service. They are hoping to be protected by Title 17, Chapter 1, section 111 a) 5 of the Copyright Act a section that allows non-profits to avoid many of the fees companies would typically pay.
Locast is asking for users to consider making a tax-deductible donation to help keep Locast going. Locast said during a call with the press today that it costs about $100,000 to $250,000 to launch in each new market. Locast is also asking for suggestions on future markets to launch into in the months to come.
The Sports Fan Coalition was created for the purpose of launching Locast and is headed by David Goodfriend. The question now is how will broadcasters react to this new service, but Goodfriend is no stranger to pushing back against broadcasters and the NFL.
