A few months ago it was reported that AT&T reps in Hawaii had been signing people up for DIRECTV NOW without permission. Now it seems there are still some AT&T customers still affected by this because we are once again hearing of an AT&T customer finding DIRECTV NOW being charged to their credit card without permission.
This weekend on Reddit a post went live about one user’s experience. Apparently after talking with an AT&T rep about a non-DIRECTV NOW–related issue, that customer suddenly found DIRECTV NOW added to their account. It took some work, but some Reddit members ended up being able to help.
On the post, a former AT&T rep posted on Reddit saying “As a former att rep I have had to fix this so many times.”
So why is this happening? According to AT&T reps in Hawaii, AT&T sets goals for DIRECTV NOW sales from each store and call center. They even have bonuses for meeting the goals. So, according to a rep on Reddit and ones who spoke to reporters in Hawaii, this has led to AT&T reps signing people up for DIRECTV NOW who did not want the service.
“Check your statements, I have no doubt that there are still people that are being charged,” a current AT&T employee told Hawaii News Now. Now we know at least for this AT&T customer they have been billed for months for a service they didn’t use.
How does this happen? From the looks of it, store and AT&T reps can just add DIRECTV NOW to an existing AT&T account, so your AT&T payment information on file is billed. Sometimes reps add it and go back to remove it later because it still counts for their quota. Other times they forget, and you end up getting billed.
When asked about these complaints an AT&T spokesperson sent Cord Cutters News the following statement. “Last year, we detected some simultaneous customer orders and cancellations of a product promotion. As a result of our investigation, we reversed unauthorized charges and took appropriate action with employees who were involved. We also have sent communications to our teams and made changes to prevent this in the future.”
So, make sure you check your statements to ensure you are not being billed for DIRECTV NOW services you are not using. Now, this goes for all services not just AT&T and DIRECTV NOW. Always closely watch your statements to make sure you are not being billed for services you are not using.
